The Fipresci Jury consisted of Rolf-Ruediger, chairperson from Germany and Selvaggia Velo- from Italy.
The discussion round started with role of International Jury in selecting the films. Gonul Donmez shared her experience with the line that judging from the catalogue was interesting as well as challenging. It has been revealed to the press that the selection was based on unanimous decision. Sudhir Nandgaonkar talked about the national & international festivals that take place through out the year. He said, “The films selected in national festivals have always been judged by Indian Jury. But here at MAMI’08 the selected films should have a local taste and should be appealing to masses universally. These things should be kept in mind while judging such things. Dan Wolman added that Universal appeal doesn’t depend on popularity. “Universality and Commerciality is totally different” – was the view of James .P. Mimikos .
Sudhir Nandgaonkar also said that MAMI’08 is the one such film festival that has been able to set the trend of film fests. He was answering to the question whether any award winning film had an impact on Jury while judging films. Replying to a question James .P.Mimikos said festivals are very important for any film and festivals like MAMI give opportunity to independent film makers to present their work and also prove to be a platform for young film makers. The festival also brings films from across the world and at the last Sudhir Nandagaonkar agreed that, “Now we are getting better films” He was comparing earlier years of MAMI when they had wait for entries to be submitted. He was happy that the scenario had changed and there were many International and national entries because of which there was a more positive approach to such festivals.
